Dr. Selassie I is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Africana Studies, at the California State University, Northridge and Director of the Centre for Southern California Studies. He holds a PhD and MA in History from the Claremont Graduate University (USA) an MA in Africana Studies (University of California, Los Angeles), Theology (University Notre Dame) and Public History and Historic Preservation (California State University, Dominguez Hills). Gabriel specializes in Africana Intellectual and cultural history with an emphasis on Marcus Garvey and the Intersection of Africana political ideas and Africana theology and Africana public history. He has also published widely in leading academic journals, including Journal of Africana Religions, California History Journal, Delos: A Journal of Translation and World Literature, and the 76 King Street Journal of Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey. His recent book Ethiopian Americans: History, Culture and Experiences (Bloomsbury) was published in February 2025.
